  4.     Demonstrators around the world are linked these days by a
  5. curious common denominator. From Beijing to Beirut, Managua to
  6. Moscow, the placards and banners waving above the throngs are
  7. written or printed in English. The messages are as varied as
  8. the nations: WE TRUST MR. DEMOCRACY, insist the Chinese students
  9. in Tiananmen Square; THE UPRISING WILL CONTINUE UNTIL WE GET
  10. OUR RIGHT, say Palestinian youths in the Israeli-occupied West
  11. Bank; WHO IS BUSH TO TELL US WHAT TO DO? say pro-Noriega forces
  12. in Panama. During the past year, it seems, English has become
  13. the lingua franca of protest.

  15.     The reasons have to do not only with the steady growth of
  16. English as the international language but also with the impact
  17. of television and the seeming omnipresence of the Western press.
  18. As a Chinese student at Harvard put it last week, "We are well
  19. aware of the power of the networks." Savvy demonstrators realize
  20. that English slogans will reach a much wider audience than
  21. placards written in Urdu, Hebrew or Russian script. They also
  22. know that U.S. public opinion -- and America's political
  23. leadership -- will get their message directly.
